Re: Faculty Council Membership

Date: 2004-10-26

At its last meeting, the faculty of education unanimously approved the following motion:

The Faculty of Education Council will include the Dean, any Associate Deans or Assistant deans that may be appointed in future, all core faculty members with a primary appointment in the Faculty, all core faculty from other departments who hold an appointment of 25% or greater in the Faculty of Education and the practicum coordinator as a voting ex officio member. The President, Vice-Presidents, and Associate Provosts of the University, the Deans of other Faculties of the University, the Secretary of Academic Council, and the University Librarian will serve as ex-officio non-voting members of the Faculty Council.

Additional representatives, as called for by Academic Council, will be added when the number of voting members, as described above, becomes ten or larger.

This membership statement is guided by the general policy on faculty councils. The provisions for representatives of administrative staff, students, etc. will be met when the faculty size is 10 or larger. We have specified the inclusion of the practicum coordinator on faculty council because the role, though classified as administrative, functions as a member of faculty. The position plays a central role in the relationship with schools and in direct contact with students. The faculty feel strongly that, regardless of classification, the person filling this position should have a vote on council.

We request that Academic Council approve this membership.
